How long does it take to grind out a tree stump?

The length of time it takes to grind a stump will vary depending on the size of the stump and how many we are grinding. The process can take anywhere between 15 minutes and two hours.

Will stump grinding remove the roots?

We typically grind the stump to below ground level to a minimum depth of 350mm. This means that the tree’s root system will remain underground.

Will a tree regrow after stump grinding?

Trees can start to grow back from the remaining stump after tree stump grinding. This process, however, will happen over many years so you’ll have plenty of warning if it is going to grow back.

IS IT BETTER TO GRIND OR REMOVE A STUMP?

Stump grinding and removal come with their advantages and disadvantages. Depending on your unique requirements, you may choose either. Here are the pros and cons to stump grinding and removal…

Stump Grinding

Pros Cons
Faster and more efficient to remove. Possibility of eventual sprout.
Less labour-intensive. Possibility of root decay.
No unsightly hole left. Potential hazard in a garden.
Environmentally friendly. Can’t plant trees and plants in the area.
Woodchips can be used for mulch. Remaining roots could attract pests.

Stump Removal

Pros Cons
Complete elimination of stump and roots. Time and labour-intensive.
Clean landscape to replant on. More upheaval in your landscape.
No health hazards. Leaves a large hole after removal.
No roots left reduce the likelihood of pests. Not environmentally friendly.
If diseased, infected roots are removed. Costly alternative to grinding.

Overall, stump grinding is a more efficient, cheaper and less invasive alternative to stump removal.

OUR TREE STUMP GRINDING FAQs

CAN I GRIND A STUMP YOURSELF?

Whilst you may be tempted to undertake stump grinding yourself, doing so could pose an unnecessary risk. Stump grinding involves using heavy machinery; therefore, we highly recommend calling in specialist tree surgeons and arborists instead.

I’M A RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMER, WILL YOU NEED ACCESS TO MY HOME?

We typically don’t need access to our client’s homes as long as there is external access around your property that we can use to move our equipment through.

HOW MUCH NOISE WILL YOU MAKE?

Due to the nature of the work, tree stump grinding will cause an amount of disruption. Although some noise is unavoidable, we work efficiently to try to make sure this is kept to a minimum.

HOW MESSY IS TREE STUMP GRINDING?

Tree stump grinding creates woodchips and sawdust, therefore there will be an unavoidable amount of mess. However, we use protective barriers to protect your property and nearby structures. We also clean up after tree stump grinding is complete.
