WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF POLLARDING A TREE?

Pollarding has been around for centuries and, since medieval times, has been recognised as a process to revive trees and encourage new growth. The main purpose of pollarding is to keep trees smaller and shorter than they would naturally grow by removing the top of a tree at a specific height, usually around 1.5 to 3m. In recent years, we have seen tree pollarding being undertaken for a range of purposes including:

  • To prevent trees from outgrowing their environment (such as in urban areas).
  • To reduce the amount of shade a tree casts (such as in personal gardens).
  • To stop oversized or overgrown trees from damaging structures (such as buildings or cables).

HOW IS TREE POLLARDING DONE?

Tree pollarding can be completed quickly and efficiently when you contact expert tree surgeons to complete the job for you. We can complete your tree pollarding in a few simple steps…

  1. We will cut off the central leader of the tree.
  2. Following this, we will cut all the branches around it that are at the same height.
  3. We will remove any lower limbs or crossing limbs to promote a thicker crown.
  4. Once the pollarding is complete, we will remove any branches and debris from your site.

Once the process is complete, most trees will produce “waterspouts” at the various locations where it has been cut. These areas will produce sprouts that should be removed at least once per year or every other year.

WHEN SHOULD POLLARDING BE DONE?

Tree pollarding should be completed during the autumn or winter months. This ensures that pollarding happens when the tree is dormant and is not actively growing. If undertaken when a tree is growing, pollarding can stunt a tree’s growth, remove its energy source and could even cause the tree to die.

OUR TREE POLLARDING FAQs

CAN I POLLARD A TREE MYSELF?

Whilst you may be tempted to undertake tree pollarding yourself, doing so could pose an unnecessary risk. Tree pollarding involves working at height and using a chainsaw; therefore, we highly recommend calling in specialist tree surgeons and arborists instead.

I’M A RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMER, WILL YOU NEED ACCESS TO MY HOME?

We typically don’t need access to our client’s homes as long as there is external access around your property that we can use to move our equipment and any trees, branches or other debris through.

WHAT IF MY TREE IS PROTECTED?

If you have a protected tree that you wish to pollard, you may require permits to do so. In this circumstance, we can speak to local councils on your behalf and can even complete applications if needed.

HOW MUCH NOISE WILL YOU MAKE?

Due to the nature of the work, tree pollarding will cause an amount of disruption. Although some noise is unavoidable, we work efficiently to try to make sure this is kept to a minimum.
