Is coppicing good for trees?

In the past, coppicing was commonly a part of woodland management and was used to support the community in terms of fuel and building materials. Nowadays, there is a range of coppicing benefits…

  • Tree growth is encouraged.
  • Tree health is promoted and supported.
  • Lengthens the lifespan of trees.
  • Coppicing allows light and air into decaying woodland.
  • Allows native species to flourish.
  • Wood can be used towards sustainable living.

How is tree coppicing done?

Tree coppicing can be completed quickly and efficiently when you contact expert tree surgeons to complete the job for you. The process involves felling trees at their base to create a ‘stool’ where new shoots will grow.

When should coppicing be done?

Tree coppicing should be completed during the autumn or winter months. This ensures that coppicing happens when the tree is dormant and is not actively growing. If undertaken when a tree is growing, coppicing can stunt a tree’s growth, remove its energy source and could even cause the tree to die. Speak to us for more information about when your trees should be coppiced.

Tree Pollarding Services

If you would prefer to pollard your trees instead of undertaking coppicing, then contact us today. Pollarding has been around for centuries and, since medieval times, has been recognised as a process to revive trees and encourage new growth. The main purpose of pollarding is to keep trees smaller and shorter than they would naturally grow by removing the top of a tree at a specific height, usually around 1.5 to 3m. In recent years, we have seen tree pollarding being undertaken for a range of purposes including:

To prevent trees from outgrowing their environment (such as in urban areas).

To reduce the amount of shade a tree casts (such as in personal gardens).

To stop oversized or overgrown trees from damaging structures (such as buildings or cables).

OUR TREE COPPICING FAQs

CAN I COPPICE A TREE MYSELF?

Whilst you may be tempted to undertake tree coppicing yourself, doing so could pose an unnecessary risk. Tree coppicing involves using a chainsaw; therefore, we highly recommend calling in specialist tree surgeons and arborists instead.

I’M A RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMER, WILL YOU NEED ACCESS TO MY HOME?

We typically don’t need access to our client’s homes as long as there is external access around your property that we can use to move our equipment and any trees, branches or other debris through.

WHAT IF MY TREE IS PROTECTED?

If you have a protected tree that you wish to coppice, you may require permits to do so. In this circumstance, we can speak to local councils on your behalf and can even complete applications if needed.

HOW MUCH NOISE WILL YOU MAKE?

Due to the nature of the work, tree coppicing will cause an amount of disruption. Although some noise is unavoidable, we work efficiently to try to make sure this is kept to a minimum.
