WHAT IS TREE CROWN REDUCTION?

This method of pruning reduces the overall size of a tree by selectively cutting back the outer branches of the canopy. Crown Reduction relieves stress on branches minimising the chance of failure and can prolong the life of a tree by reducing both the leverage and the sail area of the tree making it less vulnerable in high winds It can also be used to create a desired appearance or to make the tree more suited to its surroundings. An amount specified in meters is selectively removed from the Crown. Pruning back to suitable growth points large enough to become a new branch ensures the natural form of the tree whilst reducing the height and horizontal spread. Crown reduction pruning should generally not remove more than 25-30% of a tree’s branches and foliage and should be even lower for very mature trees or trees that are stressed or in decline.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TREE CROWN REDUCTION?

  • Gives a balanced and symmetrical shape to the tree.
  • Encourages regrowth.
  • Reduces the size of a tree in urban environments.
  • Minimises the likelihood of disease.
  • Removes damaged or problematic branches.

WHAT IS TREE CROWN THINNING?

The purpose of tree crown thinning is to create an even spread throughout the crown of the tree by removing selected inner branches.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TREE CROWN THINNING?

  • Allows light to travel through the branches.
  • Encourages airflow through the canopy without changing the shape.
  • Removes damaged or problematic branches.
  • Encourages the growth of fruit and flowers.
  • Minimises the likelihood of disease.

WHAT IS TREE CROWN LIFTING?

The purpose of tree crown lifting is to remove branches and limbs from the lower sections of a tree’s canopy to ensure that the public and vehicles can pass safely beneath the tree’s canopy.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TREE CROWN LIFTING?

  • Keeps branches away from buildings and traffic.
  • Reduces the risk of damage and injury to the public.
  • Allows light to travel through the branches.
  • Encourages airflow through the canopy.
  • Provides aesthetic benefits.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TREE CROWN WORK AND TOPPING?

Tree crown work and topping are terms that are often used interchangeably; however, they have significant differences. Tree topping is a pruning process that cuts off tree branches and limbs without considering the long-term impact on the tree and surrounding landscapes. Topping can cause trees to die sooner than they should by causing decay, disease and stress. Our tree crown work techniques are considerate and sensitive to the trees we work on and aim to achieve positive results that promote tree health.

OUR TREE CROWN WORK FAQs

CAN I UNDERTAKE CROWN REDUCTIONS, CROWN THINNING AND CROWN LIFTING MYSELF?

Whilst you may be tempted to undertake crown reductions, crown thinning and crown lifting yourself, doing so could pose an unnecessary risk. These processes involve working at height and using a chainsaw; therefore, we highly recommend calling in specialist tree surgeons and arborists instead.

I’M A RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMER, WILL YOU NEED ACCESS TO MY HOME?

We typically don’t need access to our client’s homes as long as there is external access around your property that we can use to move our equipment and any trees, branches or other debris through.

WHAT IF MY TREE IS PROTECTED?

If you have a protected tree that you wish to work on, you may require permits to do so. In this circumstance, we can speak to local councils on your behalf and can even complete applications if needed.

HOW MUCH NOISE WILL YOU MAKE?

Due to the nature of the work, crown reductions, crown thinning and crown lifting will cause an amount of disruption. Although some noise is unavoidable, we work efficiently to try to make sure this is kept to a minimum.

CROWN REDUCTION COST

Crown reduction cost will vary depending on several factors. Primarily the size, height and type of tree. We recommend contacting us for a competitively priced quote.

Tree Pollarding Services

Pollarding is a more severe method of pruning when compared to a standard crown reduction and focuses on reducing the size of the crown dramatically or completely removing it just leaving the main trunk and limbs. Once the first pollard has taken place its left to regrow before the process is repeated. As the wood lays down annual growth rings, a swollen ‘pollard head’ forms where new shoots grow each year. When re-pollarding, branches can be cut back to the original pollard knuckle or just beyond it keeping the tree at a desired height.
